20 prestigious universities in Europe, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon participate in the JOSYLEEN project. All partners are strong research universities, half of them comprehensive and the other half specialized institutions (mainly technology). There is a basis for wide cooperation in all subject areas and on all levels.
Partner universities in Europe
Lund University, Sweden (coordinating university) was founded in 1666. Today it is an international center for research and education that has approximately 38 000 students. Lund has an excellent academic reputation with a large number of visiting professors and international students. Lund University has recently been ranked the top university in Sweden in the Times Higher Education ranking. Contact
The University of Bologna is one of the oldest Universities in the Western World, and one of the largest in Italy: with our 5 Campuses, 23 Faculties and 70 research Departments it covers virtually all study fields. Thanks to a great international commitment, Univeristy of Bologna offers an increasing number of international courses held in English. Contact
Universidad de Granada (UGR) was founded in 1531. As a classical university with around 80 000 students, 3 600 lectures, 1 900 administrative and support staff, the UGR offers a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Every year over 4 800 international graduate and postgraduate students choose the UGR to take full study programmes or via the approximately 800 networks and bilateral exchange agreements in with the UGR is involved. Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) accounts for one-third of Sweden's technical research and engineering education capacity at university level. Education and research cover a broad spectrum - from natural sciences to all the branches of engineering as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. In addition to the research carried out at KTH´s Schools, a large number of both national and local Competence Centers are located at KTH. University of Lille is situated in the north of France and consists of three campuses: Lille 1 University (Science, Engineering and Economics), Lille 2 University (Health, Law and Political Science) and Lille 3 University (Humanities). The University of Lille represents 65 000 students in full time education, 20 000 students in continuing education, more than 8000 international students, 100 nationalities are represented, 2000 PhDs a year, 104 research centers, over 3250 university lectures and researchers, 2500 administrative and technical staff and engineers and more than 500 working partnerships with over 500 universities across the world. The three universities of Lille coordinate their actions world-wide for the setting up of specific actions, in particular: the internationalization of education and multicultural courses, the training of foreign languages, the teaching of French for Foreigners (FLE) aimed at international students, high quality integration facilities for international students, setting up of an international atmosphere throughout the University campuses, the creation of structured, working partnerships worldwide, that cover all discipline areas and the development of joint research activities in order to welcome both researchers and PhDs, and to promote the creation of European or international-scale research teams. Vilnius University, Lithuania, with a history of 430 years remains young, dynamic, progressive and open to the world's cultural and scientific values. As the oldest and largest of Lithuanian's higher education institutions, Vilnius University is an active participant in international academic and scientific activity. Vilnius University is a classical, comprehensive university with 14 faculties, six institutions, 3 university hospitals and 10 study and research centers. Leiden University is the oldest research university in the Netherlands, founded in 1575. The university hosts approximately 17 000 students and 4 000 staff members. It consists of six faculties, a School of Education (teacher training), and a Campus in The Hague. Leiden University has a top position in many fields, including natural sciences, life sciences (the so-called Red Biotech), medicine, arts, social and behavioral sciences, international law, astronomy and non-Western languages. Masaryk University is the second oldest (founded 1919) and second largest (37 000 students) university in the Czech Republic. A research-oriented institution, it covers a broad scope of disciplines ranging from medicine and the sciences (including information science) through sports studies, the social sciences and economics, to law and the humanities. Montpellier 2 University (UM2) is located by the Mediterranean Sea in France. UM2 is one of the oldest French universities, founded in the 13th century. It is a scientific and technological university which offers 189 degree programmes for bachelor's degree to PhDs. The Research and Education fields are organized in five interdisciplinary areas: Environment-Life-Food Sciences-Earth, Biology-Health Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics-Informatics-Physic-Structural and Systems Sciences; Management Sciences. The offer of study programmes is supported by a dynamic and internationally recognized research through the association of our 45 laboratories with the great national research organizations. University of Warsaw, established in 1816, is Poland's largest university. From its beginning UW has played a major role in the intellectual, political and cultural life of Poland, and has been recognised as one of the leading research and teaching centers in Central Europe. UW is a public university comprising 19 faculties and 26 independent teaching and research units, with more than 55 000 students and around 6000 staff (including 3170 academic staff members). The University of Warsaw places emphasis on international cooperation with around 480 partner higher education institutions and more than 1400 bilateral agreements. Partner universities in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon
Hashemite University (HU) is the fifth state university in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is located on the outskirts of the city of Zarqa to the east (about 45 minutes drive from the capital Amman. Zarqa Governorate is the second most populated Governorate in the country. HU believes in Internationalization as a process integrating an international or intercultural dimension or perspective into the major functions of the university, namely teaching, research, and service. Internationalization means cooperation and exchange over national borders. Today, international cooperation is rightfully seen as an indicator of quality and mark of excellence. It has become more important because we live in a globalised world in which universities play an increasingly important role as nodes in a knowledge network which links together many different actors. HU is involved in many projects that are funded from International Organizations or Agencies. Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), is a comprehensive, state-supported university located outside of Irbid at AL-Ramtha region, in northern Jordan. JUST is considered to be one of the most premier institutions of higher education for engineering and medicine in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. As of the 2009/2010 academic year, JUST counted 800 faculty members, with 19 000 undergraduate and 1465 graduate students. Contact
Princess Sumaya University for Technology, (PSUT) is a non-profit private Jordanian university - a leading university in IT and electronics, and a centre of educational excellence both locally and regionally. Tafila Technical University (TTU), Jordan is the ninth public and first technical university in Jordan. TTU, was established by the Royal Decree in January 2005 and now comprises 6 faculties that offer 37 majors. The University offers about 20 English-taught programmes in engineering and sciences. University of Jordan, (UJ), Jordan is the oldest and largest University, and the leading institution of higher education in Jordan with 37 000 students and 1 400 academic staff. Damascus University, (DU), is the leading institution of Higher Education in Syria. It is considered the mother university of all the Syrian universities. It has its origin in the medical Institute (founded in 19019 named the "Syrian University" in 1923. The present title adopted in 1953 after founding of new faculties. DU is the pioneer Arabic language in publication and instruction based on the importance of Mastering science and linking between past, present and the hoped future, DU offers extensive Arabic-language teaching programmes in addition to undergraduates, Master and PhD programmes. University of Aleppo, is a public university located in Aleppo, Syria. It is the second largest university in Syria. University of Aleppo, founded in 1958, then consisted of two faculties in Civil Engineering and Agriculture. The University grew rapidly in the subsequent decades, forming respected programs in engineering, sciences, medicine and literature, as well as a strong emphasis on languages, offering courses in the German, Russian, French and English language, in addition to Arabic. The University of Aleppo now has more than 25 faculties, 152 departments, ten other intermediate institutes, six hospitals and 17 academic centers. Contact
The American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon, was founded in 1866 as a private, not-for-profit, coeducational, independent, non-sectarian institution of higher learning in Lebanon, is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. AUB is a major university with over 7 000 students, including over 900 graduate students and 300 medical students. The University has six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine (including the School of Nursing), Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers 40 undergraduate programmes leading to bachelor's degree, 53 master's degree programmes, 8 PhD programmes, and MD degrees. The university Language of Instruction is English except in the Arabic major. AUB has a strong general education program offering in humanities, languages, and social sciences. Contact
Lebanese University Faculty of Science, is the only public university among 43 higher educational establishments in Lebanon. It gathers now 13 faculties and four institutes, three doctoral schools and covers a field of specializations, which is the vastest in the country. The Lebanese University is the only university institution in Lebanon which deals with the public higher education. It is the largest university with 80000 students and about 50 sections distributed in all the Lebanese areas. The Lebanese University ensures currently 51 specializations distributed in several domains including social sciences (letters, rights, economic), exact sciences, sciences of nature, engineering, medical sciences, literature, arts and agronomic sciences. The associated members of the Erasmus Mundus Partnership JOSYLEEN are organisations that are not universities, but through other means contribute to the transfer of knowledge and results of the program and assist in the promotion, implementation, evaluation and sustainable development of the project. It is not possible to apply for mobility directly to any of the associates.
